Complete walkthrough from account setup to your first sale. Learn how to create listings, set up shipping zones, and configure payouts.
Quick Start Timeline
Overview
This guide walks you through everything you need to start selling on Kingpin, from initial setup to receiving your first payout.
What You'll Accomplish
- Create your first listing with photos and details
- Set up shipping zones to reach buyers worldwide
- Configure secure payouts through Stripe
- Understand fees and pricing strategies
Common Pitfall to Avoid
**Missing shipping zones!** Many sellers create listings but forget to set up shipping zones. This causes listings to show as "unavailable" to buyers. We'll make sure you set this up correctly.
Prerequisites
Before you start, make sure you have:
Active Kingpin Account
You must be logged in with a verified account
Valid Identity Information
For payouts, you'll need to verify your country and identity
Bank Account Details
Required for receiving payouts (set up in Step 5)
Product Photos Ready
Clear, well-lit photos of items you want to sell
Account Setup
After signing up, you'll be guided through profile setup where you'll create your username, set a 6-digit PIN for encryption, and save your backup code.
Important Setup Steps:
- • Choose a memorable username
- • Create a strong 6-digit PIN for encryption
- • Save your backup code in a secure location
- • Set your preferred currency and language
Understanding Username Policy
Why Username Changes Require Approval
Your username is your permanent identity on Kingpin. While technically possible to change, we restrict username changes to protect the community and maintain platform integrity.
What would be affected by changing your username:
- 🔗Profile URL would change, breaking old bookmarks and shared links
- 🔍Discoverability suffers as people searching for your old username won't find you
- 📨@Mentions with your old username would no longer tag you in conversations
- ⭐Reputation Display may confuse followers who recognize you by your old name
- 🛡️Trust & Continuity in the community relies on stable identities
What is NOT affected (your data stays intact):
- ✅Encrypted messages remain fully accessible
- ✅Encryption keys are not affected at all
- ✅Reputation scores and reviews carry over
- ✅Transaction history remains unchanged
What you CAN change freely:
- ✅Display Name (Full Name) — what most people see on your profile and listings
- ✅Profile picture and banner
- ✅Bio, social links, and contact information
- ✅Currency, language, and timezone preferences
💡 Pro Tip
Most users should update their display name (Full Name) instead. Your username is mainly for @mentions and profile URLs. Your display name is what appears prominently on your profile and listings.
If you must change your username:
Username changes require admin approval to prevent abuse and maintain platform integrity. The process includes:
- • Rate limiting (once every 90 days)
- • Manual review by administrators
- • 30-day redirect from old username to new
- • Notification to your followers
To request a username change, navigate to Edit Profile → Username section and click the "Request Change" button.
Understanding Encryption Key Operations
Your encryption keys can be managed in two different ways. These operations are separate from username changes.
Key Rotation (Safe)
For security maintenance
- Keeps all encrypted messages
- Re-encrypts with new keys
- Username stays the same
- Backup code remains valid
Key Reset (Destructive)
Complete fresh start
- All messages lost forever
- New encryption identity
- New backup code created
- Username stays the same
Important: Encryption keys and usernames are separate systems. Key operations do not affect your username, and username changes do not affect your encryption keys.
Step 1: Set Your Country
Setting your country correctly is critical for payouts and fee calculation.
Why This Matters
Your country determines:
- Which currency you'll be paid in
- Your platform fee rate (varies by country)
- Payout eligibility (must match your bank country)
- Tax and compliance requirements
How to Set Your Country
- 1
Navigate to Account Settings → Preferences
- 2
Find the 'Country & Currency' section
- 3
Select your actual country of residence from the dropdown
- 4
The currency will automatically update to match your country
Example: Preferences Page
Step 2: Create Shipping Zones
Shipping zones tell buyers where you can ship and how much it costs. Without shipping zones, your listings won't be available to anyone.
🚨 This is the #1 Issue New Sellers Face
If you create a listing without shipping zones, buyers will see:
**Solution:** Always create at least one shipping zone before creating listings!
Understanding Shipping Zones
A shipping zone is a group of countries with similar shipping rates. For example:
- 🇺🇸United States only
- Standard: $5.00 | Express: $12.00
- 🇨🇦🇬🇧🇦🇺CA, GB, AU, etc.
- International: $25.00
How to Create a Shipping Zone
- 1
Navigate to Account Settings → Shipping Zones
- 2
Click "Add Zone" or "Create Your First Zone"
- 3
Select your shipping zone currency (USD or KRW)
- 4
Choose your shipping origin country (where you'll ship from)
- 5
Give your zone a name (e.g., "Domestic", "International")
- 6
Select countries included in this zone
- 7
Set prices for shipping services (Standard, Express, etc.)
- 8
Click "Create Zone" to save
💡 Quick Start Recommendation
Start with just one domestic zone:
- Zone Name:"Domestic" or "[Your Country]"
- Countries:Just your home country
- Services:Standard ($5-10) and Express ($10-20) shipping
You can always add international zones later!
Shipping Services Explained
| Service | When to Use | Typical Price |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Domestic ground shipping (5-7 days) | $5.00–$10.00 |
| Express | Expedited domestic (2-3 days) | $10.00–$20.00 |
| International | Cross-border shipping (10-21 days) | $20.00–$50.00 |
| Local Pickup | Meet in person (same city) | Free |
Step 3: Create Your First Listing
With your country set and shipping zones configured, you're ready to create your first listing!
You're Ready If...

- 5

Set your price in your local currency
- 7

- 8

- 9

Pricing Your Item
Consider these factors when setting your price:
What Increases Value
- Rare or limited edition items
- Excellent condition with photos
- Original packaging included
- Popular brands (Tech Deck, Berlinwood, etc.)
What Decreases Value
- Heavy wear or damage
- Missing original parts
- Poor quality photos
- Incomplete product information
💰 Remember: Fees Are Deducted
The marketplace takes a 3-7% platform fee plus ~3% payment processing fee. If you sell a $50 item, you'll receive ~$45-46 after fees. Price accordingly!

Step 5: Set Up Payouts
Before you can receive money from sales, you need to set up your payout account through Stripe Connect.

Troubleshooting Common Issues
"This item doesn't ship to your location"

Solution: Go to Account Settings → Shipping Zones and create at least one zone that includes the buyer's country.
Payouts Are Disabled
Problem: You created a Stripe account but payouts aren't enabled yet.
Solution: Complete the Stripe onboarding process. Check your email for requests from Stripe, or click "Complete Setup" in Account Settings → Payouts.
Wrong Currency Showing
Problem: Your listing shows prices in the wrong currency.
Solution: Go to Account Settings → Preferences and verify your country is set correctly. The currency automatically matches your country.
